Composers’ retreats

The purpose of the retreats is to give composers and songwriters opportunities to seek new inspiration in a new setting – and to find the peace and quiet required to create new music. The retreats take place in specially selected properties in Denmark and abroad.

Composers retreats in Lofoten, Lille Skiveren in North Jutland, Kaninhullet in South Zealand and Musikanterhuset on Langeland can be sought by all composers and songwriters who are members of Koda.

The Composers’ retreat grant gives composers and songwriters a possibility for working retreats in properties located in Denmark and abroad. The work residencies are self-organised.

Each retreat lasts one week, except for Kaninhullet on South Zealand, which lasts five days.

Retreats are available in Lofoten, Lille Skiveren in North Jutland, Kaninhullet on South Zealand and Musikanterhuset on Langeland. Further descriptions and terms for each residency can be found here

Changes from 2026 regarding New York and Musikanterhuset on Langeland

From 2026, we will no longer offer work residencies in New York. Instead, from 2026 all members of Koda can apply for work residencies at the retreat Musikanterhuset on Langeland.

  • State the period requested – state which week(s) you would like and rank them in order of importance. You can request up to three weeks all in all, but you cannot stay in any of the individual retreats for more than one week. You are very welcome to state whether any other weeks than your three main priorities would also be suitable to you.
  • State the purpose of your retreat and the expected outcome (ten lines or less).
  • Describe your work as a composer (ten lines or less)

There are two annual application deadlines:

  • 1 April at 3:00 p.m. for residencies taking place in the period from week 27 up to and including week 53.
  • 1 October at 3:00 p.m. for residencies taking place in the period from week 1 up to and including week 26 of the following year.

Applications open approximately four weeks before the application deadline.

The retreats are allocated by a curation committee appointed by Autor's board.

If you are awarded a one-week stay at a retreat, you will need to pay a small share of the costs yourself: DKK 1,000. You must pay your travel costs yourself. The stay itself is free; for some retreat’s meals are included too. For details, check out the individual retreats here.

Responses are sent approximately one month after the application deadline

You cannot receive funding for the same project from multiple grant schemes under Koda Culture. This is in accordance with our regulations, section 6.D. You can find the regulation here.

This means that, for example, if you apply for funding for a release, you can only receive support once for your release project. In other words, you cannot receive funding for a release from both the Release Fund and the Publisher Fund. However, you may receive support for other phases of the same project from other funds. For instance, if you have received funding for the release, you may apply for support for the next phase of your project, such as marketing the release, from the PR funds.

An exception to these rules is the Potential Funds, which are not part of the Cultural Funds.

We have funds that support the various phases your project may go through. These phases can – from an overall perspective – be divided into:

  • Create (idea, clarification, writing)
  • Improve/Develop (coaching, camps, education)
  • Release (recording, mixing, mastering)
  • Disseminate (PR/marketing, concert production, trade fairs and exhibitions)
